China’s state planner wants to eliminate bitcoin mining in the country, according to a draft list of industrial activities the agency is seeking to stop in a sign of growing government pressure on the cryptocurrency sector. China is the world’s largest market for computer hardware designed to mine bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, even though such activities previously fell under a regulatory grey area. The suggestion is that the power consumed by the industry contributes to pollution and wastes resources. FCoin, a crypto exchange that adopted the controversial “trans-fee mining” model, has paused trading and withdrawal as it reveals a shortage of crypto assets worth up to $130 million. Tesla Inc. is no longer accepting Bitcoin for car purchases, as Chief Executive Elon Musk cites long-brewing environmental concerns for a swift reversal in the company’s position on the cryptocurrency. Musk tweeted his decision to suspend its use, less than two months after Tesla began accepting the world’s biggest digital currency for payment.

The article focused mainly on the utility of blockchain technology, promoting the idea that banks and government institutions may implement their own blockchains to create “cheap, tamper-proof public databases”. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday denied for the second time in a month a request to bring to market a first-of-its-kind product tracking bitcoin, the digital currency.

The Hangzhou, China-based company listed its offering size as $400 million in its filing with the U.S. Five men behind a company called BitClub Network are accused of a $722 million scam that allegedly preyed on victims who thought they were investing in a pool of bitcoin mining equipment. Federal Reserve announced that it would cut interest rates to 0%, launch a $700 billion quantitative easing program, and the regulator provided additional details about the type of securities it would purchase. The massive stimulus package is designed to combat the market turmoil brought about by the novel Coronavirus but shortly after the announcement, Dow futures dropped 1,000 points.

Japan officially recognizes Bitcoin as legal tender, a move that seems positive but may actually be a cynical attempt to regulate the currency and impose more restrictions on how people use it. The hard fork basically doubled Bitcoin holdings (so if you held 10 Bitcoins on July 31, by August 1 you’d hold 1 Bitcoin and 1 Bitcoin cash). The new currency began trading at about $240 (compared to $2,731 for its older sister). Segregated Witness is the name for a Bitcoin protocol by which the block size limit on a blockchain is increased by removing signature data from Bitcoin transactions. The name refers to the different transaction signatures, as the process reduces the size a transaction takes on a block and therefore speeds up the network by moving “witness data” to the end of the transaction. In August 2017 Bitcoin Core, the most popular protocol software, began to implement SegWit transactions. In response, some developers hard-forked Bitcoin to a separate blockchain called Bitcoin Cash. The crackdowns came as global regulators started to notice the potential risks in Initial Coin Offerings and in digital coins released through fundraisings known as token sales.
